The following is meant as a helpful resource for our incoming tenants to contact the companies that provide utility service to our apartments. It is up to you to decide which of these you wish to use, and you alone are responsible for setting up accounts with those services. It is important to make these arrangements PRIOR to moving in, to assure that there is no lapse in service.
ELECTRICITY:
NYSEG: provides electric service delivery to the entire Ithaca area. You can set up new accounts, turn service on and off, pay your bill and much more via the website. For those of us who need to talk to someone (albeit wading through a long mess of auto answering first!) Phone number: 800-572-1111
For a life-threatening electricity emergency, |
PLEASE NOTE: You can chose whom you buy electricity from, and NYSEG will be the delivery system. There are far too many of these providers to list here. We suggest you start with NYSEG and research providers and their rates. You can also chose to buy electricity from NYSEG.
PROPANE GAS:
please note: all our places use PROPANE gas, NOT natural gas. NYSEG does NOT provide propane gas. There are several providers of propane gas in the Ithaca area. We have worked with all of the following, and of these, have had the longest term and most successful business relationship with Mirabito (formerly Andree Petroleum) All of our utility rooms are set up with Mirabito as our fuel provider, and most of our tenants also contract with them. The advantage of this is simply this: if there are any issues that arise, a quick phone call from Ann to the folks at Mirabito is virtually guaranteed to solve the difficulty. That said, you are welcome to contract with the gas company of your choice.
IMPORTANT! If you smell the rotten egg odor of gas, call your gas provider, NOT NYSEG

TRASH PICKUP AND RECYCLING:
Tompkins County Solid Waste: Their website is quite helpful! Below is their list of garbage haulers with whom you can contract to pick up your trash. You may also opt to save the cost of a trash collector and take it to the transfer station yourself. Details about Ithaca’s bag and tag trash system, recycling, electronics and hazardous waste disposal and more can be found on their website.
If you chose to hire a hauler, check with your neighbor in your building to see who they use, and perhaps avoid duplication of effort.
